RadKick 7-Speed and Belt Drive controller replacement guide

If Rad Power Bikes Product Support determines your RadKick 7-speed or RadKick Belt Drive has a defective controller, use the following procedure to remove and replace the controller.

Tools needed:

  • Small Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat side cutters
  • Extra zip ties
  • Electrical tape
  • Bike stand (optional)
  • Nitrile gloves (optional)

Take pictures of cable connections, cable routing and controller placement before you start removing these items, as once you replace the controller you will reinstall everything in its original position.

  1. Get the ebike ready for maintenance. Turn off the ebike, remove the battery, and press and hold the Power button on the display to discharge remaining power.
  2. Remove battery mount. Use a small Phillips head screwdriver to remove the bottom battery mount inside the frame downtube. The controller is located in the frame downtube below the bottom mount.
  3. Remove the old controller.
    1. Unplug the battery, PAS, wiring harness and taillight cable connectors (see diagram).
    2. Unplug the motor connector on the chainstay, cut the zip tie holding the cable length in place, and then feed the cable length back into the frame downtube opening.
    3. Remove the old controller and recycle according to local rules (if possible)

  1. Install the new controller.
    1. Position the new controller so that the cables feed into the downtube opening.
    2. Feed the motor cable length through the downtube opening and reconnect the motor connectors on the chainstay. Replace the zip tie connection on the chainstay to secure this cable length.
    3. Reconnect the battery connector, PAS, wiring harness and taillight cable connectors (see diagram), and press together without twisting. Use electrical tape to bundle these cables together tightly so that they will fit inside the frame downtube opening along with the new controller.
    4. Mount the new controller in the frame downtube on top of the bundle of cables, and ensure they are pushed as far down as possible so that the battery mount can be reinstalled properly.
    5. Reinstall the battery mount in its original position, and use the screwdriver to reinstall the mounting bolts until secure.
  2. Reinstall the battery, test the bike fully, and ride Rad!
