Radster rear wheel, rack and fender removal guide
Use the following procedures to remove the rear wheel on a Radster Road and Radster Trail ebike to perform any maintenance on the rear wheel. Once the rear wheel is off, you can also remove the rear rack and fender as described separately below.
Tools needed:
- 4 mm Allen wrench
- 21 mm wrench
- Torque wrench with Allen bits and crowfoot bit
- Flat-side cutters
- A few replacement zip ties
- Wooden blocks or a towel (optional)
- Nitrile gloves (optional)
Remove the rear wheel
Take pictures of cable connections, axle nuts and washer positions, as once you have completed maintenance you will need to reinstall and reconnect everything in its original position.
- Get the bike ready for maintenance. Turn off the bike, remove the battery, and press the Power button on the remote to discharge any remaining power.
- Shift the bike into 8th gear. Lean the bike on the kickstand, rotate the cranks forwards, and shift the bike into 8th gear so the chain moves to the smallest cog.
- Flip over the bike. Set the handlebar grips on wooden blocks or a towel to protect the Color Display from damage while performing maintenance.
- Locate and unplug the motor cable. The motor cable is mounted on the chainstay. Snip nearby zip ties as needed, unscrew and pull the motor connectors directly apart, without twisting, to unplug.
- Remove the torque arm bolt. Use a 4 mm Allen wrench to remove the torque arm bolt and washers.
- Remove the axle nuts. Use a 21 mm wrench to remove the axle nuts and washers and set aside.
- Pull the derailleur body toward the back of the bike and remove the wheel. If the rear wheel is difficult to remove, rock the wheel back and forth while lifting, without touching the brake rotor. Lift the chain off of the cog.
- Perform any necessary maintenance. Once the rear wheel is removed, change the tube or tire, swap in a new wheel, etc.
- Reinstall the rear wheel. Position the rear wheel so that both sides of the rear axle fit in the frame dropouts fully and the brake rotor slides between the brake pads evenly. Reinstall the torque arm on the brake side and use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 5 Nm. Reinstall the rear wheel axle nuts and washers and tighten both sides to 55-65 Nm. Reconnect the motor connector and replace any zip ties you previously removed.
Remove the rear rack and fender
Once you have removed the rear wheel you can remove the rear rack and fender as necessary. Note that the rear rack mounts on top of the rear fender, so you must remove the rear rack in order to remove the fender.
Additional tools needed:
- 8 mm and 10 mm wrenches
- 3 mm and 5 mm Allen wrenches
- Disconnect the taillight. Disconnect the taillight connector by pulling the connectors apart without twisting. If you are replacing the taillight, use an 8 mm wrench to remove the bolts that mount the taillight on the rear rack. If you are removing the rear fender, you will need to pull the other end of the taillight cable to remove it from within the fender cavity where it is routed.
- Remove the rear rack. Use a 5 mm Allen wrench and 10 mm wrench to remove the bolts that connect the rear rack arms to the seat stay tubes. Use a 3 mm Allen wrench to remove the two bolts that secure the rear rack to the fender.
- Remove the fender. Use a 3 mm Allen wrench to remove the remaining two bolts on the fender. On the Radster Road model, use a 4 mm Allen wrench to remove the fender mounting arms.
- Replace any components as needed. Install a replacement fender and/or rear rack and tighten the mounting bolts to the torque values listed in your Owner's Manual. Note that if you are replacing the rear fender, you will have to route the taillight cable through the new fender and reconnect it to the taillight mounted on the rear rack.
