RadExpand and RadMini Step-Thru frame hinge adjustment guide

Over time and with normal use, the RadExpand and RadMini Step-Thru frame hinge quick release lever may loosen and need to be tightened or adjusted.

The frame hinge quick release lever may need to be adjusted if:

  • The quick release lever is loose and does not close properly
  • It is too easy to close the quick release lever
  • The bike makes a creaking noise when you sit on it or ride the bike

This article applies to the RadExpand and RadMini Step-Thru models. Follow the instructions below to adjust the frame hinge quick release lever on your RadExpand or RadMini Step-Thru.

Tools needed:

  • 5 mm Allen wrench
  • 10 mm wrench
  1. Get the bike ready for maintenance. Turn off the bike, remove the battery, and press and hold MODE to discharge remaining power.
  2. Open the quick release lever.
    1. Unseat the locking lever. Press down on the security latch and pull the quick release lever out and toward the back of the bike.
    2. Unhook the back of the locking lever to release the frame hinge lock.

When opening or closing the quick release lever, use caution to keep fingers, clothing, etc. away from folding parts and potential pinch points to avoid injury. Ensure the frame is properly aligned and hardware is secured before riding.

  3. Tighten the quick release lever adjustment nut.
    1. Locate the quick release lever adjustment nut and use a 10 mm wrench to hold the nut in place.

    2. Use a 5 mm Allen wrench on the bolt head (shown below) and turn clockwise (toward the front of the bike) a half-turn to tighten the quick release lever.

    3. Close the lever. This will require enough resistance that it leaves an imprint in your hand.

    4. Repeat the adjustment until the quick release lever nut is tightened, and close the quick release lever securely.

If the quick release lever is hard to close, it is likely too tight. Use the wrench to hold the nut in place, then use a 5 mm Allen wrench to turn the adjustment bolt counterclockwise (toward the back of the bike) one half turn to loosen, and try to close the quick release lever.

  4. If the security latch sticks, the screw that holds it in place may be too tight, or the internal spring may be damaged.
    1. Use the 5 mm Allen wrench to remove the security latch screw and verify that the spring end is not damaged.
    2. Place the spring end in the left most position (see below) and reinstall the screw, but do not overtighten.

    3. Verify the security latch doesn't stick and holds the lever in place securely.
  5. Double-check that the lever is closed securely.

  6. Reinstall the battery, test the bike fully, and ride Rad!
